CHESS Federation of Zambia (CFZ) president Lewis Ncube will not recontest his position at next month’s elective annual general meeting in Kabwe.
Ncube said in an interview in Lusaka on Thursday that he is not seeking another mandate because he has other commitments.
Ncube, who is also FIDE vice-president, said he will be available to offer guidance.
“The executive members wanted me to hang on, but the nature of the job I will take up after March will not give me room to attend to CFZ matters,” he said.
Ncube also urged delegates to the February 16 meeting to vote for credible candidates who will contribute to the development of chess.
So far, only CFZ tournament director Chanda Nsakanya has announced his intentions to vie for the position of secretary.
The deadline for submitting nominations is February 8.

THE Chess federation of Zambia (CFZ) has set February 16 as date for its elective annual general meeting (AGM) which would be held at Kabwe’s Musuku Lodge.
According to a letter of notice signed by CFZ president Lewis Ncube, all the 11 positions in the executive were up for grabs and urged all aspiring candidates to follow the laid down procedure in filing in nomination papers.
“The Chess Federation of Zambia shall hold its elective general assembly on Saturday, February 16, 2013 in Kabwe at Mukusu Lodge starting at 09:00 hours.
“We expect all members to observe time,” he said.
Submitting of nomination forms would close a week earlier on February 8, this year.
Ncube had led the CFZ executive for over a decade but stepped down and watched the sport for eight years from the sidelines before deciding to bounce back into the leadership four years ago.
He said any aspiring candidate should follow the standard procedure which was to fill in the nomination form and be nominated by two clubs from different zones and then pay a mandatory K100, 000 (KR100) nomination fee.
Ncube said only nomination forms signed either by the club chairperson or secretary would be validated and that all nominating clubs should be fully paid up with the CFZ.
In accordance with the CFZ constitution, he said, all nominations for the aspiring candidates would be verified by the returning officer and that only the federation’s forms would be used in the electoral process.
The positions up for grabs are those for president, vice-president, secretary, vice-secretary, tournament coordinator, treasurer, vice-treasurer, disciplinary committee chairperson and four committee members.
