THE Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ) intends to invite six foreign players from neighbouring countries to compete in this month’s Zambia Closed Invitation Chess tournament in Mansa.
The championship starts on March 29 and ends on April 1 at Henry’s Courtyard.
Federation secretary, Chanda Nsakanya, said in Ndola yesterday that the CFZ will invite six foreign players from Malawi and Zimbabwe to compete against Zambians.
Zimbabwe’s International Master Robert Gwaze was the CFZ main choice for the invitation. The Zimbabwean top chess player appears committed with other events.
But Nsakanya said there are other players from Zimbabwe and Malawi who would be invited.
The Zambia Closed Invitation tournament will be played alongside the National Individual Chess championship that will have the Zambia’s top players squaring it off for the top honours at the same venue in Mansa.
The event will be for the title of the 2013 Zambia Closed Invitational Chess Championship whilst the National Championships events will produce the country’s individual chess Champion in the open section and a national Individual women champion for the year 2013.
“These national championships top five players will constitute the national team for 2013 whilst the top three will automatically qualify to represent Zambia at the 2013 Zone 4.3 and the 2013 African Individual Chess Championships to be hosted by Botswana and Tunisia respectively,” he said.
