The Christmas Open championship lured top men and women chess players squaring it off for top honours.
The seven-round tournament which started on Saturday and ended on Sunday with 2011 Zambia Sportsman and Sportswoman Daniel Jere and Epah Tembo, missing through family commitments saw the top spot shared with 3 players.
The strongest challenge for Chitumbo who become the favorite was expected from Gillan Bwalya, Linus Katebe, Richmond Phiri and Kelvin.
Other potential threats were Thomas Zulu, Boniface Ng’onga, Chanda Nsakanya and Lesley Chikuse. With Epah Tembo’s absence main rivals in the ladies category were Lorita Mwango, Busiwa Namwila, Yvonne Palatem and Potiah of Luanshya.
Copperbelt Chess Association treasurer, Bright Bwalya, said yesterday that competition is expected to be tough.The prize for the runner-up was K1 million. The third and fourth finishers was K700,000 and K300,000, respectively.
The top three will also receive medals.
Players from the fifth to the eighth position received K150,000 each. The best veteran (over the age of 37 years) got K150,00o and a medal.
The best youngest player got K150,000 and a medal
The best woman on the final standings got K300,000 and a medal.
